Correspondence to Alma Mahler, 1956-1961, n. d.

2 letters from Erwin Ratz concern Alma Mahler's status within the recently founded society, as well as materials she might provide and questions she might be able to answer concerning Gustav Mahler's work. In an undated draft letter (after 1951), presumably to Ratz, Alma reminsces about her life with Mahler, especially with respect to his work on his symphonies. An undated fragment of a typed letter tentatively identified as written by Ratz mainly concerns his support of the view (which he took to be Alma Mahler's view at the time) that no attempt should be made to reconstruct Mahler's unfinished tenth symphony in its entirety; he proposes the formation of an international working committee (Arbeitsgemeinschaft) to examine Mahler's drafts and sketches for the symphony. (The first reconstructed performing version of the symphony was produced by the Mahler scholar Deryck Cooke for a BBC broadcast in 1960; see related correspondence under: British Broadcasting Corporation.) 1 item from 1961 is a mailing from the Dutch section of the society, announcing an exhibition being held in the Netherlands in 1960-1961 in honor of the centenary of Mahler's birth and the 50th anniversary of his death. The flyer for the latter exhibition bears extensive annotations by Alma Mahler concerning her gift to Willem Mengelberg of the handwritten score of Gustav Mahler's seventh symphony, and her expectation that the score would be given to the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam upon Mengelberg's death; a draft of 1 letter from her concerns the same matter. See related correspondence on this issue under the correspondents: American League of Authors and Composers from Austria; Bottenheim, S. A. M. (Salomon Adriaan Maria), 1880-1957; and Mengelberg, Willem, 1871-1951. For related correspondence concerning the founding of the Internationale Gustav Mahler Gesellschaft, see under correspondents: Wiener Philharmoniker; and Adler, F. Charles (Frederick Charles), 1889-1959. See also other correspondence between Alma Mahler and Ratz about Gustav Mahler's work under: Ratz, Erwin.
